Seven ways to boost your employability as a final year

As Easter draws to a close, it’s time to start preparing for life after university and your future career. Here are seven ways to boost your employability before graduating;

1. Take the What Next? Survey

If you are graduating this summer, don’t forget to fill in the What Next? survey  by Sunday, 21 April to get personalised careers support straight to your inbox.

2. Do some virtual work experience

Online work experience is a flexible way for you to help develop some transferable skills. These opportunities can range from a few hours to several days, but the self-guided nature of the tasks mean you can fit the experience in around your studies. Here are some ways to find virtual work experience.

3. Attend out careers events

As a service we offer several events across the year to help you meet employers, network with alumni and begin job hunting. Check out our Unlock Your Future series, Recruiter in Residence or Future Focus Week for some ideas, and be sure to check CareerConnect for more!

4. Join the UoM recent graduates LinkedIn group

The University of Manchester Recent Graduate Careers Network is the University’s official recent graduate LinkedIn group. Building a professional LinkedIn profile and networking with alumni can significantly enhance your career prospects. We post regularly about job advertisements, networking opportunities and employer events, so this is a great place to get started.

5. Explore some of our online resources

We have an array of online resources which you can use to enhance your skillset. These include a series of recorded workshops, on-demand pathways, assessment centre practice and interview simulations which can all be useful to your career development.

6. Spring clean your CV

CareerSet Online CV Checker is a free resource that you can use to get feedback on your CV on demand. CareerSet will scan your CV against what top recruiters say they look for in a CV and score you accordingly. This tool evaluates the strength of your word choice and gives you tailored feedback.

7. Follow us on Instagram

If you don’t want to miss out on careers events, news and support, Instagram is a great place to stay connected to us. We regularly post about events coming up, some of which are tailored especially to final years and graduates.

Remember, you can continue to use the Careers Service now and for up to two years after you finish your course. Find out more about the graduate careers support available to you.
