My first full-time job as an Manchester Graduate Talent Intern

Graduate Salma started their first full-time job with Manchester Graduate Talent (MGT) – an exclusive internship for graduates at The University of Manchester.

I began my Manchester Graduate Talent (MGT) role as a Humanities Admissions Assistant in September 2022, and it was an amazing working experience. The opportunity to work in a full-time capacity allowed me to gain valuable insights into the inner workings of a professional setting, I wouldn’t have otherwise had.

What I learned about the working world

The MGT scheme was a great introduction to the working world, providing me with a comprehensive understanding of the expectations and demands of a full-time job. While I had prior experience with part-time, temporary, and one-off work, transitioning to a full-time position was initially daunting. However, I quickly discovered that the key to success lies not only in adhering to workplace etiquette, such as addressing colleagues appropriately and dressing professionally, but also in effectively collaborating with others and delivering high-quality work.

Developing strong interpersonal skills and fostering positive working relationships have proven to be essential in achieving long-term project goals. Additionally, I have learned the importance of adaptability and time management, as unexpected schedule changes and shifting deadlines require a flexible approach. Through this experience, I have not only formed valuable connections with colleagues from diverse backgrounds but also gained valuable insights into office dynamics and the significance of collaboration in the working world.

My advice to students and graduates starting an MGT role

For students and graduates embarking on an MGT role, I would strongly encourage you to embrace the opportunity as a means of developing transferable skills. This experience will allow you to take initiative, enhance your commercial awareness, and gain a deeper understanding of how various aspects of a business function. It is crucial to immerse yourself in the context of your work and proactively seek opportunities to expand upon your ideas. The application process itself was a useful experience in and of itself, into your strengths and areas for improvement when it comes to presenting yourself professionally.

Once you secure an MGT role, it becomes an exciting journey of self-discovery and skill development. It enables you to build a strong professional network and address any weaknesses head-on. As someone who tended to be self-critical and hesitant to share new ideas, I can attest to the transformative power of support from colleagues and engaging in self-reflection. Over time, I gained more confidence in my professional abilities and became more willing to contribute innovative ideas. I wholeheartedly recommend pursuing an MGT role as it offers a remarkable opportunity to delve deeper into your chosen field and offers an unparalleled learning experience.
